Talk about 'Brrrrr'!

After I read the outside temp, I peeked out in shock to see what -27 felt like. The boys had gone up the slope to catch the first morning rays to start warming up.

When I got up yesterday morning, it was 28 degrees. When I got back from the post office around noon, it was 14 degrees which is where it held until I went to bed around ten. I got up at 2:30 to put more wood in the stove and it was 8, so I thought well, this won't be as bad as they are saying. But then I got up at 6:30 and discovered it was -27!!! Now that is cold.

Ahhhh...warm sunrays.

Not one of the dogs wanted to go out to potty even though it had been about ten hours since they had last been out. When I went out to feed the boys, it was all the way up to -5. Geez...I'm sure glad these aren't the usual winter temps around here! It's almost eleven now and we're all the way up to 14.

I wonder if Carmon broke the ice on the water trough yet?

Yin and yang mustangs coming and going for water.

Tough little Fionna didn't have any problem going outside with me.

Vannie got to try out her new snow booties and once she got used to walking in them, seemed quite happy to have her tender old feet staying warm.

I wonder if she's dreaming about getting her own snow booties?

AeroGarden update...I love these things! They have a small footprint, only 19" x 9" and they put out a nice full spectrum ambient light. It's been just about a week since I set them up and the little plantlets are growing like crazy. I'm thinking I will go ahead and get a third one before spring just for herbs.

Lettuce on its way to being a salad.

Cherry tomatoes in process...

I can't even imagine temperatures that cold! Will all that snow help you water-wise this spring, or is its beauty all it has going for it?

Hi Velvet - yes, the more snow pack we get during the winter, the less fire danger we will be in during the critical dry months of May through June until the monsoon rains start. I had a hard time believing it was that cold too and kept going back and reading the temp again!

Wow Carmon,That is amazingly cold! You guys stay warm and safe!

Love the tiny garden. Thanks for keeping us informed. Maybe that's a garden I can handle!

The lowest I experienced in Durango was -4 and that was COLD. As in all moisture in my nose froze up immediately! I have 4-pack of dog booties for you if you'd send your mailing address to me at dulyinspired@yahoo.com. Cheyenne wouldn't wear them then (beyond the pose) and I'd love to see them put to use. What am I going to do with them here where there are still leaves on the trees? ;-)

There's nothing I've found to brighten up the cold winter days than an Aerogarden. I love these things. Have you seen the ultimate 3 shelf wall garden???

Brr!! Stay warm! How in the world do the horses stay warm in that cold, without blankets?

Love that thought bubble of Ellie's!

Hi everybody...I was pretty shocked by that temp too. I think it's the coldest it has been since we moved here. I know Angelfire had a record low of -25 that morning and they are usually much colder than we are. It's supposed to be back up to the 40s tomorrow. Yay!

4th sister, Holly and FST, I think these AeroGardens are a great invention for people with limited time or a limited growing season. They also make kits so you can use them to start your own plants inside, which is a real bonus here where our last freeze date is late in May. FST, never heard of that garden system...would love to see a link.

Janet, you wouldn't believe how thick the horses' coats are this time of year. You can't even work your fingers down to their skins. It seems really harsh for us, but they are built to take it and we keep a bottomless hay pile out for them when it's that bad. Digesting roughage creates a *lot* of body heat.

Alison is donating Cheyenne's unwanted snow booties to Ellie and I'll take photos when she gets them.

Hey there...if you go to www.aerogrow.com and click on accessories you'll find the three tiered shelf. How do I know? After seeing your 'garden' I looked into it. Think I'm going to get one!
