I made the leap.

I've been agonizing for weeks about entering an online equine photo contest and finally, tonight, at the last minute, I entered four photos in the Equine Ideal: Spring 2008 Photography Contest. I've been an artist all my life, a graphic designer for more than half of it. My confidence level about art by now is always pretty high. This made me really anxious. As I told Mike while we were feeding the horses tonight, I know I have a good eye for subject and composition...I would have to in order to survive in the graphics world as long as I did. But photography is a whole new media for me and there is a lot I don't know about it on the technical end of things.

Hopefully I'm not breaking the rules by showing the photos I chose here...Amateur Division- Entrants who do not have earnings in excess of $1000 per year from the sale of photographic products or services entering work that has not been previously published or awarded in other equine photography competitions. I know for a fact I haven't made any money with photography and hopefully, this blog doesn't count as 'publishing in an equine photography competition.'

There will be a 'People's Choice' award and voting will be open from April 5th - 15th. You can go over between those dates and vote on your favorite photo in the top ten of each division. If one of my photos makes it there, you better be sure I'll let you know and maybe, you'll like it best.

I entered the first three in the 'Horses at Liberty' division.

Llego - 'He Arrived'...Home

My Heart in the Storm*

Down from the Mountain

This one is in the 'Details' division.

Besol - 'Sun Kissed'

*Jon Johnson, a singer/songwriter, fellow horse lover in the United Kingdom helped with the title for this one.

And one more! Vote for Ellie, Duffy and Vannie in the Humane Society Spay Day 2008 contest!

Hey Sarah! I was just over visiting at your place and I love the new sculpture! Thanks on the photos...means a lot from a fellow artist.

Good luck, Carmen. It's always hard to say how the judges will vote. Photography, like any other form of art is suggestive.

Even if you don't place anything this year, enter this contest again and again until you fully understand what the Judges want to see. Then you will begin to win. Just don't give up.

Seriously, My heart in the storm, and Sunkissed. I love both those photos. I've returned many times to the My heart in the storm one. You capture that moment that's beautiful in a horse's movement, that moment that makes us say they are graceful. I'm so excited that you entered the contest!!!

Alison that means so much to me! I really respect your photography skills and you know and love horses too, so that is a wonderful compliment. I appreciate so much hearing that those photos touched you as well, especially the one of my sweet gray Griton.

You should win at least one! I looked at last year's amateur winners, I like yours much better! The one you did for Details is terrific.

Carmon, these are wonderful, and I'm so glad you decided to enter them. You have a natural gift for photography -- and quite a few great models, too.
