Thank you also Winifred. No herons up here since there are no bodies of water of anykind anywhere near us. Plus, since the deck is 13' above ground, surrounded by very tall ponderosa pines; the pond is only 2 foot in diameter and surrounded by railing and plants; there is no 'swoop' room at all. A bird would either have to sit on the rocks and fish, or be able to helicopter like a hummingbird!

7th Sister & Holly, raccoons are a nice thought to take the blame off Nicodemus; but we don't have those either. I know it's weird to say, but raccoons seem to have become far more common in urban areas than in what used to be their natural habitat. Since we have none of their natural diet growing up here and are careful with trash etc due to the possibility of bears, the coons stay down in the valley where they can get easy garbage, dog food and raid chicken houses.

Do you have heron? They just fly in and swoop, they don't stand about. My niece had problems with them around her pool. She had to get a net to protect the fish.
